::MEME OF THE CROP::From
Something Requisitely Witty and Urbane:
10 years ago: I had just graduated from high school. I was probably at Target buying dorm room stuff. At that point, I'd never had a boyfriend, had never heard Tori Amos or They Might Be Giants, and had never really felt at home in a group of friends (I had some great friends, mostly singly, but never had a comfy clique).
5 years ago: By then I'd fallen in love twice, been engaged twice (sadly, only one of the former was one of the latter - long, cruddy story), found my college niche, graduated from college, and was in one of the two periods of my life wherein I might be considered a slut. I was between my two years in grad school, and I worked part-time as a Mad Scientist, doing science birthday parties and workshops (it ruled). I'd broken up with a
major rebound guy, and I was dating about five guys. One was my first boyfriend, one was questionably gay, one had been such a stoner in college that he was unable to reach orgasm (ack! dealbreaker!), and one - for a bit - was
Robert. It was awesome, but the forced schizophrenia wore on me. I ended up meeting Jeff, and chose him over all the others. Oh, and I got acquainted with Radiohead. Big axis of life plot, mmmm hmmm.
1 year ago: I got out of grad school, cheated on and dumped by Jeff, and a "real job," which sucked because I hadn't done 40 hours of anything in a given week until then. Except maybe sleep. I went through another quasi-slutty period (ah, Internet dating!), and then had settled down with Ian, sweet, smart, dryly funny, and ultimately not a match for me. So I broke up with him after a fateful Halloween party, and while I dated both of the guys I was attracted to at the party (and had a whirlwindedly fun relationship with one of them), nothing really annealed. But, um, Ian's roommate, with whom I stayed in touch after Ian and I broke up, stayed a good friend. And was chronically compelling as a love interest. His name was Austin. And a year ago he and I were in the throes of Month Two. I'd heard Four Tet. And Sigur Rós. And I was in love.
Yesterday: I took off work to get some stuff done around home. I blogged some, rearranged furniture, worked out, and got ready for lunch. I met Austin at Obzeet, which is excellent, and then I bought some light bulbs and various hooks, nails, and adhesives at Target. I later went to Plano to meet up with some friends from whom Austin's buying a car. Woo hoo!
Today: I was Manager on Duty. Work work work. Then coming home to "Battlestar Galactica," and loving it. I will buy the DVD. Austin and I just went to the
Paper Jam exhibit/benefit at
Gray Matters Gallery. I bought a book done by David Byrne called "What Is It?"; Austin got a
Soler t-shirt. Yay. The best part? We walked about 100 feet from our front door to get there. I could have worn
extremely uncomfortable shoes and still been okay.
Tomorrow: Breakfast, maybe the paper, work out, then Manager on Duty again. After that, who knows?
5 snacks I enjoy: McVities Milk Chocolate Hobnobs (discovered at York), Sun Chips, popcorn, oranges, and edamame.
5 bands that I know the lyrics of MOST of their songs: Death Cab for Cutie, Lisa Loeb, The Beach Boys, Ben Folds (Five), and Fiona Apple.
5 things I would do with $100,000,000: (I was about to say that all of these would involve investing a portion of the money, but shit, it's a hundred million dollars! I should be fine with that for
ever.) Endow a scholarship for a high-achieving yet eccentric high school students at SMU, a school which needs eccentric kids. Permanently eliminate my non-profit employer's financial worries. Build dream homes for myself, my parents, and my brother. Buy every item in the
Engadget archives. Fund swift research for the cure of cancerous brain tumors.
5 locations I’d like to run away to: Bali, New Zealand, San Francisco, Austin, and Belize.
5 bad habits I have: Leaving stuff on the couch, hitting snooze, popping zits, blogging at work, and obsessively checking email.
5 things I like doing: Reading, writing, driving, doin' some red-hot cuddlin' (best euphemism for sex ever, I think), and being in water.
5 things I would never wear: Ponchos (this is really hard, since I don't want to rule anything out, because someday I might think gaucho pants are cute, y'know? but definitely not ponchos), size XL t-shirts, mules (I fall out of them), bras or panties that don't match the clothes on top of them, or a bikini (I am very, very particular about "bikini worthiness" - you've got to be
perfect if you don't want me to get snarky).
5 TV shows I like: "Battlestar Galactica," "Seinfeld," "Gilmore Girls," "The Simpsons," and "The Montel Williams Show."
5 Movies I like:
Magnolia,
The Shawshank Redemption,
Dancer in the Dark,
Memento, and
The Life Aquatic.
5 famous people I’d like to meet: Jon Stewart, Jason Kottke, Xeni Jardin, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Beck.
5 biggest joys at the moment: The way my straight hair gets mildly wavy when it's wet on my shoulders as it is now, the process of writing this and contemplating, the mercerized cotton comforter over my bare feet, the arch of Austin's back as he codes fifteen feet from me, and the knowledge that I've never been as ecstatic about my future as I am now.
5 favorite toys: My String Thing, my digital camera, my Bodum Santos coffee maker, my clothing and jewelry collection, and words.
Not gonna tag anyone or anything. This was fun.
